How do Seagreens® compare with other ‘superfood’ supplements?

Fresh water algæ and grasses - spirulina, blue-green algæ, chlorella - are usually farmed in natural and artificial lakes and water tanks. Barley, wheatgrass are farmed on land. All these land foods take on the nutrients found in those places and their nutrient profiles differ widely.

Seagreens® has a very consistent, broader nutritional profile but a smaller amount of individual nutrients. As a result Seagreens® and superfood supplements are very complementary (they have a synergistic effect). If you want the breadth and balance, and you want the highest amount of nutrients, this would be a way of covering all your needs.

It should be remembered that superfoods and superfood formulations have significantly different amounts which vary widely according to source and brand, from zero to more than 1000% the RDA for some nutrients.

Blue-green algæ, particularly from the high altitude lake source in Oregon, USA, has very high levels of some nutrients and a complete absence of others. The balance and relationship of the phytonutrients in Seagreens® show no such extremes.

Formulated vitamin & mineral supplements are not natural foods. They contain substantially larger amounts of a narrower range of nutrients and also vary widely according to brand.

Are Seagreens® the same thing as ‘kelp’?

No. Seagreens® Food Capsules contain 3 special varieties of wild bladderwrack, the most nutritious of all seaweeds: Ascophyllum nodosum, Pelvetia canaliculata, and Fucus spiralis.

Common kelp is the most widely presented seaweed (laminaria) but of a different genera and species to Seagreens®. Seagreens® is uniquely certified human food quality seaweed. Kelp is normally a cheaper bi-product of industrial harvesting for alginate extraction and horticulture, but provides a rich source of iodine, plain or extracted, usually sold in tablet form.

Much laminaria and even wrack seaweeds are harversted or dredged in large quantities without due care for the marine environment. To make a significant contribution to nutritional balance, the daily intake of kelp would contain too much iodine and in the case of kelp tablets, too much binder or filler as shown in the table below.

Seagreens® products do not not contain kelp or any additives. A daily dose of kelp sufficient to approximate Seagreens® nutritient profile, would entail an excessive intake of iodine, and if in tablet form, excessive filler (research 1997):

Composition of two of the most widely sold brands of kelp tablet (brand 1 Holland & Barrett / brand 2 FSC Icelandic Kelp) showing excessive daily intake of constituents if dose equivalent to Seagreens® recommended daily intake of 1000mg pure seaweed.

  • In brand 1: 6.06 kelp tablets per day would be needed to match Seagreens® recommended daily intake of 1000mg (2-a-day capsules). This would mean a daily intake of 700µg iodine, 1903mg binder, and 400mg calcium (Holland & Barrett).
  • In brand 2: 4 kelp tablets would be needed, entailing a daily intake of 900µg iodine, and 1000mg binder (FSC Icelandic Kelp).

Can I feed Seagreens® to my children?

Yes. Early Victorian poetry tells of children chewing sticks of seaweed as ‘sweets’ and definitely better for them! Seagreens® Salad & Condiment can be chewed in exactly this way, an excellent aid in oral and dental health and hygiene.

Seagreens® Culinary Ingredient has extensive possibilities because children tend towards a limited range of foods. A sprinkling of Culinary Ingredient turns staples such as pizzas, baked beans and ‘french fries’ into highly nutritious ‘whole’ foods.

A teaspoon of Culinary Ingredient to a can of baked beans not only provides all the nutrients; it helps the beans to be digested more thoroughly for better nutrient absorption and less flatulence!

It is for this reason that Craig Sams of Whole Earth Foods added Seagreens® to his organic baked beans! Seagreens® Culinary Ingredient can be baked into pizza bases, bread, cakes etc - please see for our Recipe Collection.

You can use it as you would use salt in most recipes, using up to 4 times as much according to taste as it is far more subtle than salt, bringing out the real flavour of the food rather than affecting the taste buds directly as salt does.

Children might enjoy grinding the Salad & Condiment onto their chips. And it is perfectly safe for them to take the Food Capsules (one daily is quite sufficient) so long as they find no difficulty in swallowing the capsule.

In her book ‘The Organic Baby Book’ published 1999, author Taniya Maxted-Frost says “the contents (of 1 Seagreens® Food Capsule) can even be sprinkled on to infants’ weaning foods from six to eight months”.
